Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you have a copier?  Printer?  Fax machine?  How much are copies?

A: Yes.  Copies, from the black-and-white copier and printer, are $0.15 a page.  Faxes are $1 a page.  Color copies are also $1 a page, and you must have the librarian's permission to make them.

Q: Do I need a library card?

A: Absolutely.  We are now live, so our items cannot be taken out without a library card.

Q: Do I need to bring my card in every time?

A: Yes.  As above, you can't check out library materials without it.

Q: Is that true for everybody?

A: Yes.  It's true for every member of our staff, volunteers, and Board of Trustees.

Q: How old does my child have to be to get a library card of his/her own?

A: There is no set age.  As a general rule, a child can get a library card when you and your child agree that she/he is responsible enough to return his or her items on time, and in good condition.  Remember, any overdue fines or replacement costs your child may incur will be in his or her own name, so please take that into consideration.

Q: If my child is getting a card, what does he/she need?

A: Your child will need to bring a piece of current photo ID, with her/his current legal address on it.  If your child doesn't have one, yours will do.  If the child is eighteen and under, his/her parent or legal guardian must be with her/him at the time they are applying for a card, and must sign their name on the information card.

Q: Can my spouse/relatives/friends use my card?

A: No.  Every patron needs to have, and use, their own card.  If your spouse uses your card, and returns an item late or in poor condition, you will be responsible for any fines or replacement costs.

Q: Do you charge fines for overdue items?

A: Yes.  We charge $0.10 per item per library day (days we're open).  As stated in the policy, our maximum fine is $10.

Q: Do you have WiFi (wireless Internet)?

A: Yes.  You don't need a special password to use it, either.

Q: Do you have computers for patrons to use?  Do I need a library card to use them?

A: Yes, we have computers for patrons.  No, you don't need a library card to use them.  Just come in when we're open, and fill in the forms we have by the computers, and you're set.

Q: Is there a time limit on computers?

A: Yes.  You may use the computers for one hour total per library day.  If you are taking a test online, or something like that, and need more time, ask.

Q: Do you have a bathroom?

A: Yes, in the lobby.

Q: Do you have an automatic door opener?

A: Yes.  It can be operated from the inside or the outside.

Q: Can I still order books, now that you're live?

A: Yes, you can.  Just come into the library with a list of what you would like, or call, or click the Catalog button on this website.  We will do our best to help you.

Q: I have a library card for Lowville.  Do I need a separate one for Croghan?

A: No.  The Universal Library Card is just that, universal.  You can use it in every library in Lewis, Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Oswego Counties.

Q: Do you have programs for children?

A: Yes.  We have the summer reading program during every July and August.  We also have special events during the rest of the year.  We advertise such events online, around town, and in our local media.
